Where does the word fumo come from? 🔎
Fumo comes from Latin fūmus, which in turn comes from Proto-Italic *fūmos, previously *θūmos. The ultimate root is the Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós, meaning "smoke". This ancient root has also given rise to the English word dust!

The millennial smoke of the Solfatara of Pozzuoli went up to smoke

What a pity! Next weekend, I'm going to Naples, and I wanted to fulfill my dream of visiting the Solfatara of Pozzuoli, but unfortunately, it's closed for safety reasons and my plans went up to smoke.
I was looking forward to listening to the guide to learn more about the Phlegraean Fields, this unique piece of Italy full of history. The ancient Greeks passed through here - Phlegraios means "burning" or "fiery" in Greek - as did the Romans and even Goethe because this was a stop on the Grand Tour!
But, since we can't enter, I researched from home.
I discovered that the Solfatara is an ancient volcano, one of the many that form the Phlegraean Fields near Naples. Although it's not as active as Etna or Stromboli, it's not completely dormant. It continuously emits gases and vapors, creating a unique natural spectacle.
For this reason, the ancient Romans had called this place "Forum Vulcani", the home of the god Vulcan.

One of the most impressive things is undoubtedly the Bocca Grande, a large fumarole that emits vapors up to 160 degrees. You'd melt! The sulfur must make the smell very strong, like rotten eggs.
I'll write to you when ticket sales reopen: if you're in Italy and you're interested, we can visit this lunar landscape together and then go eat a pizza!
How about where you live? Are there volcanoes near where you live?
